ARE AUDITIONS STILL HAPPENING IN PERSON?

The audition form is a google form that includes the ability to upload your audition videos right on the form before you click "submit." WHAT DO I NEED TO PREPARE FOR MY AUDITION?
Prepare two contrasting 32-bar cuts of musical theatre songs of your choice (in the style of Into the Woods and/or Mamma Mia, Stephen Sondheim, ABBA, a pop/rock song, or contemporary musical theatre) along with a completed audition form (using the link above), a performance resume and a headshot. Be sure to find your own instrumental/accompaniment track that you can sing with in your audition videos!
CAN I SING A SONG FROM THE SHOW?
Absolutely! This is your audition and you can sing any musical theatre song of your choice! If you feel that a song from Into the Woods or Mamma Mia will show your voice off best, that's great! However, we do encourage that you sing from outside of the show as well. Performers auditioning for Mamma Mia are strongly encouraged to sing a pop/rock song as one of their selections.
DOES MY PHOTO HAVE TO BE A PROFESSIONAL HEADSHOT?
While we do recommend that you submit a professional headshot for auditions, it is not required. You can bring any size photo of yourself that you have available that gives us a clear sense of what you look like every day.
WHAT SHOULD I INCLUDE IN MY PERFORMANCE RESUME?
You should include any training and experience relating to singing, acting or dancing, including your experience in any previous theatrical productions. If you are interested in a resume template, please email us for one and we'd be happy to send over an example!

We have posted a full character breakdown for both of the shows above!
WHEN WILL I HEAR ABOUT CASTING?
We will schedule a round of callbacks to take place on Sunday, April 25th. You will receive an email by Saturday, April 24th if you are asked to attend callbacks. After we review callback materials, our production team will meet to make casting decisions and we will email all auditioners after all casting decisions are made.
CAN I STILL BE CAST IF I DO NOT GET A CALLBACK?
YES! We will only read for select roles for callbacks so if you do not receive a callback email, that does not mean you aren't cast in the show. Please keep an eye out for the cast list!
WILL THE SHOWS BE DOUBLE CAST?
No, the shows will not be double-cast. Each production will have one cast, and the productions will perform July 22-25 on an alternating schedule.
WHEN ARE REHEARSALS?
Rehearsals take place on Monday evenings, Thursday evenings, and Saturday afternoons beginning June 7th. Rehearsals will be in a hybrid format (a mix of both virtual and in-person rehearsals) so that we can accommodate rehearsing two shows at once! Performances run July 22nd-25th.
I MAY HAVE A POSSIBLE CONFLICT DURING THE REHEARSAL PERIOD. WHEN SHOULD I BRING THIS TO SOMEONE'S ATTENTION?
We can approve some conflicts prior to casting! This means that once the cast list is posted, we will not accept any additional conflicts and will adhere to a strict participation and attendance policy (only ONE absence is allowed in the mainstage program). We have a short 6-week rehearsal period prior to tech week and we work at a very intensive pace so if you do have any potential conflicts (sports games, weekly dance class, recital, a one-week vacation, etc.), please make sure you write it down on your audition form.

The Spotlight Arts Summer Mainstage Season 2021 presents TWO large-scale commercial productions in repertory directed by industry professionals and is by audition only. Rehearsals take place three days per week: Monday evenings, Thursday evenings, & Saturdays beginning June 7th. Only ONE absence is allowed in the mainstage program. However, some conflicts and summer vacations can be pre-approved prior to casting! Be sure to include any and all conflict dates on your audition form! Tuition to participate in a summer mainstage is $395.
Performers interested in auditioning are asked to prepare two contrasting 32-bar cuts of musical theatre song selections in the style of the shows. All auditioners will be considered for BOTH productions (Mamma Mia & Into the Woods Jr). You can state your show casting preference on your audition form. In order to be considered for a principal role in a mainstage production, Spotlight Arts now holds a pre-requisite training program called the Mainstage Core Program. This six-session course has been launched to uphold the integrity of our nationally recognized and award-winning mainstage program and a spring session is offered in April (virtually, hybrid, or on-demand*) and guarantees a principal role callback. Performers only interested in ensemble roles do not need to fulfill this prerequisite. After losing her mother’s magic beans, she is cursed with “ugliness”. She believes that if she can reverse this curse she will be able to secure a lasting life with a child she has kidnapped and kept in a tower. Through her journey, she comes to realize that her wish will not bring her the happiness that she has longed for and decides to take her fate in her own hands. Twisted, Torn, Triadic. Principal Role.
Male, Vocal Range: A Flat 2-G4.
This man is scared by past abandonment and is just trying to get by in life. Because of the lack of a male’s influence, he can’t grasp the reality of being a man, a husband, or a father. As we progress through the show, he learns life is messy and no one is truly alone. Innocent, Idealist, Ignorant. Principal Role.
The Baker’s Wife
Female, Vocal Range: F3-G5.
A mid-western house wife type desperately seeking for her life to be different. I’m not sure if she knows what she wants. Her wishes vary between children to a more glamorous life of royalty. Desperate, Determined, Dreamer. Principal Role.
Female, Vocal Range: G3-G5.
She too wishes her life were different. However upon getting her wish, she realizes it’s not what she thought it would be. How can she find middle ground in an ever changing world? Hopeful, Honorable, Hesitant. Principal Role.
Male, Vocal Range: B2-F4.
Men and Women all want to either be or be with him and he knows it. This playboy is use to all the accolades without deserving one of them. Life for him is deciding which maiden to seduce next. Self-centered, Shallow, Shame-less. Supporting Role.
Little Red Riding Hood
Female, Vocal Range: B flat 3-F5.
Coming from a life of privilege, this little one must learn to be more cautious. Her carefree lifestyle comes in contact with dangers beyond her imagination. How she deals with these situations will force her to take a good look at herself and everything she thinks she knows. Careless, Caught, Challenged. Principal Role.
Male, Vocal Range: B2-G4.
Feeling he has no friends in the world, he finds solace in the family’s cow. Unable to read his surroundings, he lives his life in dream land. It’s not until he trades the cow for magic beans that his gigantic adventures begin. His quest up a beanstalk teaches him lessons he never thought he would learn. However, with all his experiences he is still search for the ways of being a man. Principal Role.

A single mother left by a dead beat husband to raise a clueless son whose imaginary friend is a cow. This is a woman who loves her son but wishes he would grow up. She has been beaten down by a life of poverty until her son finds a golden hen. How will she handle this new found way of life? Jaded, Jilted, Justified. Supporting Role.

How would you feel if your whole life you’d been trapped in a tower with only a crazy witch to talk to? Here we find a girl who wishes to see the outside world. However her lack of human contact or knowledge of the world proves to be a challenge for her. Upon being banished to aremote desert with her twins by a wondering stranger, she cracks. Utopian, Used, Unglued. Supporting Role.

After having to live in his brother’s shadow for so long, this handsome young lad sets out to seek his own adventures. Upon falling in love with a dreamlike maiden, he is pierced with the realities of life. Will he pursue a family life or try to find happiness elsewhere? Attractive, Adoring, Annoyed. Supporting Role.
Cinderella’s Stepmother & Stepsisters (Lucinda and Florinda)
Stepmother: Female, Vocal Range: A3-F Sharp 5.
Lucinda, Florinda (Step-Sisters): Females, Vocal Range: C4-A Flat 5.
These three women are always pursuing a glamorous lifestyle to save them from their current situation. They wear the best that they have in order to mask their poverty. They are like vultures in that they find joy feeding off others.

Is he a beggar or a hermit or father to half of our characters? We know at least he is the father of the Baker and Rapunzel. This man is either on the run from responsibilities or can’t stand to face the guilt he has to live with from all the pain he has caused. You decide. Wacky, Weathered, Withdrawn. Supporting Role.
Female, Vocal Range: G3-A Flat 5.
Her projection of reality is heavenly. She appears in times of trouble to guide her child and help fulfill her wishes. Heavenly, Helpful, Holographic. Featured Ensemble Role.

This creature is always on the lookout for his next meal. He entices his victims with flowers and fun until they willingly succumb to his desires.

This is a woman who has been calloused by life. The fire in her eyes is only out shined by the love in her heart for her granddaughter.

Donna: Mezzo/Belter, A complex woman who is more than she seems on the outside. Warm, yet strong, Donna gave up stardom with her group, the Dynamos, to raise her daughter, Sophie. She is fierce and independent, and she loves freely. Donna has a sensitivity about her that she has been trying to hide for 21 years.
Sophie: Pop Soprano, a young woman who is determined to find the romance and happiness she feels eluded her mother. Has an adventurous spirit even though she pursues a conventional marriage. Must be able to move extremely well. Principal role.
Tanya: A former singer in the “Dynamos.” Rich, sophisticated, acerbic, funny, and witty. Actress who sings. Must be able to move extremely well. Supporting principal role.
Rosie: Also a former singer in the “Dynamos” who now writes for and runs a feminist press. She’s confident, strong, and funny on the outside but shy underneath. Kooky and fun, good comic actress, a bit of a clown. Actress who sings. Must be able to move extremely well. Supporting principal role.
Lisa: Sophie’s friend who arrives to be a bridesmaid. Very energetic and kooky. Must be able to dance. Supporting role.
Ali: Sophie’s friend. Impulsive and fun. Should contrast to Lisa and Sophie. Must be able to dance. Supporting role.
Sam: Baritone, May be Sophie’s father. Left Donna 20 years ago because he was engaged to another woman. Charming, successful architect. Actor who sings. Should be able to move well. Supporting role.
Harry: High Baritone/Tenor, May be Sophie’s father. British financier, wealthy, buttoned-up, and conservative but trying to reconnect with his freer, youthful self. Must do a very convincing English accent. Also an actor who sings. Should be able to move well. Supporting role.
Bill: May be Sophie’s father. A travel writer with no possessions or strings. Good-natured, always ready for adventure. Funny, comedic actor. Should be able to move well. Supporting role.
Sky: Sophie’s fiance. Athletic, attractive – was a successful businessman. Left to help Donna with her taverna and marry Sophie. Supporting role.
Pepper: Baritone/Tenor, Sky’s friend. Helps run the hotel. Charming, loves wom- en, always flirting. Must be able to dance. Acrobatic skills a plus. Supporting role.
Eddie: Baritone/Tenor, Another friend of Sky and hotel worker. Laid-back, easy- going. Must be able to dance. Supporting role.
