The Spotlight Arts Summer Mainstage 2022 presents a large-scale commercial production by audition only. Note NEW Summer Mainstage Rehearsal Schedule: Rehearsals take place weekdays Monday through Friday 10AM - 3PM. Only ONE absence is allowed in the mainstage program. However, some conflicts and summer vacations can be pre-approved prior to casting! Be sure to include any and all conflict dates on your audition form! Tuition to participate in a summer mainstage production is $595.
Performers interested in auditioning are asked to prepare two contrasting 32-bar cuts of musical theatre song selections in the style of the show. To submit your audition, fill out this audition form by the June 1st deadline! Casting notifications will be sent out by June 3rd.
ARE AUDITIONS VIRTUAL OR IN PERSON?
We have moved all auditions to digital VIDEO SUBMISSIONS for casting. The deadline for submitting replacement audition video auditions is June 1st! The audition form is a google form that includes the ability to upload your audition videos right on the form before you click "submit." You can submit the audition form through this google form link: https://forms.gle/ahBr9bTWDrPsNm128
WHAT DO I NEED TO PREPARE FOR MY AUDITION?
Prepare two contrasting 32-bar cuts of musical theatre songs of your choice (in the style of Matilda or contemporary musical theatre) along with a completed audition form (using the link above), a performance resume and a headshot. Be sure to find your own instrumental/accompaniment track that you can sing with in your audition videos!
CAN I SING A SONG FROM THE SHOW?
Absolutely! This is your audition and you can sing any musical theatre song of your choice! If you feel that a song from Matilda will show your voice off best, that's great! However, we do encourage that you sing from outside of the show as well.
DOES MY PHOTO HAVE TO BE A PROFESSIONAL HEADSHOT?
While we do recommend that you submit a professional headshot for auditions, it is not required. You can bring any size photo of yourself that you have available that gives us a clear sense of what you look like every day.
WHAT SHOULD I INCLUDE IN MY PERFORMANCE RESUME?
You should include any training and experience relating to singing, acting or dancing, including your experience in any previous theatrical productions. If you are interested in a resume template, please email us for one and we'd be happy to send over an example!
WHAT ROLES ARE AVAILABLE IN EACH SHOW?
We have posted a full character breakdown above!
WHEN WILL I HEAR ABOUT CASTING?
Casting announcements will be sent out by June 3rd.
CAN I STILL BE CAST IF I DO NOT GET A CALLBACK?
YES! We will only read for select roles for callbacks so if you do not receive a callback email, that does not mean you aren't cast in the show. Please keep an eye out for the cast list!
WILL THE SHOWS BE DOUBLE CAST?
No, the shows will not be double-cast. The production will have only one cast!
WHEN ARE REHEARSALS?
Rehearsals take place weekdays Monday through Friday daily from 10AM-3PM at the Studio Around the Corner in Brewster, NY.
I MAY HAVE A POSSIBLE CONFLICT DURING THE REHEARSAL PERIOD. WHEN SHOULD I BRING THIS TO SOMEONE'S ATTENTION?
We can approve some conflicts prior to casting! This means that once the cast list is posted, we will not accept any additional conflicts and will adhere to a strict participation and attendance policy (only ONE absence is allowed in the mainstage program). We have a short 3-week rehearsal period prior to performances and we work at a very intensive pace so if you do have any potential conflicts (sports games, camp, a one-week vacation, etc.), please make sure you write it down on your audition form.
I NOTICED ON THE AUDITION FORM THAT THE MAINSTAGE TUITION FEE HAS INCREASED. WHY IS THIS?
Please note that we did our very best to keep tuition prices down during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, this was not sustainable for the survival and integrity of our programs. The tuition prices for our 2022 summer mainstage programs have increased due to significant increases in production expenses, facility rental expenses, and to provide our skilled and knowledgable industry-professional instructors with the compensation they deserve! The subsidized tuition fee is $595 to keep tuition costs as low as possible for our students and their families who need it, as our mainstage program returns to live indoor theatre with increased instructional and production expenses. The "actual" cost of tuition for each cast member in our mainstage production is $800. Cast members who submit the actual cost of tuition will not be required to sell a minimum of 10 tickets to performances.
WHO DO I CONTACT IF I HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT AUDITIONS OR VIDEO SUBMISSIONS?
Please email our executive director Stephanie Scuderi at email@example.com (or call our office number at (914) 306-5582 and leave a message).
WHO WILL BE REVIEWING MY AUDITION?
Our mainstage creative team who will be reviewing all audition submissions are our Spotlight Arts Executive Director, our mainstage director, musical director, choreographer, assistant directors, and stage manager.
Any additional questions can be addressed to firstname.lastname@example.org!
"Rebellion is nigh in Matilda, a gleefully witty ode to the the anarchy of childhood and the power of imagination! This story of a girl who dreams of a better life and the children she inspires will have audiences rooting for the "revolting children" who are out to teach the grown-ups a lesson.
Matilda has astonishing wit, intelligence... and special powers! She's unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Matilda's school life isn't completely smooth sailing, however – the school's mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don't abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils' saving grace!" - MTI Shows
MATILDA WORMWOOD: The hero of the show. She’s brilliant, resilient, creative, and kind, despite growing up in difficult circumstances. Her parents treat her poorly, but Matilda escapes into a world of books, which puts her reading level far above the other children in her class, and she develops a bit of magical power in an effort to defeat Trunchbull.
ERIC:A student at school with Matilda. He has the very first solo line of the entire show and some featured moments as one of Matilda’s schoolmates.
AMANDA: A student at school with Matilda. She has a few solos and lines, but her most featured moment is when Trunchbull throws her through the air using her pigtails.
BRUCE: One of Matilda’s schoolmates. He has the bad luck to get caught after eating Trunchbull’s cake. Bruce goes through quite a transformation throughout the show and has some important solos.
ALICE, HORTENSIA, & TOMMY: Classmates of Matilda who each sing solos, and Hortensia has a few lines.
LAVENDER: One of the kids at school with Matilda. She is kind and bright (though not as brilliant as Matilda) and quickly decides that Matilda is her best friend. Likable and friendly.
NIGEL: One of the kids at school with Matilda. He is enthusiastic, sweet, and always in a bit of a panic. Nigel has a few solos and some great featured moments in the show.
MR. WORMWOOD: Matilda’s father. He is egotistical, rude, and not very bright, not to mention a liar. Though Mr. Wormwood is not a good person and he is mean to Matilda, his harebrained schemes can be hilariously funny, so we are seeking a fantastic character actor in this role who can really land the comedy and isn’t afraid to play an unlikeable character. It’s helpful if Mr. Wormwood reads as older onstage and makes a dynamic pair with Mrs. Wormwood.
MRS. WORMWOOD: Matilda’s mother. Like her husband, she dislikes Matilda and does not understand why her daughter loves to read. Mrs. Wormwood is selfish, obsessed with her own appearance, and believes everything she sees on TV. Her dancing lessons with Rudolpho are the most important part of her day. Seeking an actor who can portray Mrs. Wormwood’s nastiness but also play up her ridiculousness and lean into the comedy.
MICHAEL: Matilda’s brother. He is not very bright, though he is the apple of his father’s eye. This is a hilarious supporting role for an actor with comedic timing, as Michael’s contributions to the scene usually function as deadpan one-liners.
MRS. PHELPS: The kindly librarian who loves hearing Matilda’s stories. This is a great featured role for a strong actor who reads as older than Matilda onstage.
ESCAPOLOGIST: A character of Matilda’s creation. Everything this character does is grand and exaggerated – he’s performing for the cheap seats! A fun featured role.
ACROBAT: A product of Matilda’s imagination. Cast an actor in this featured role that can give their all!
MISS HONEY: A teacher at Matilda’s school. She is kind, is generous, and really cares about the children despite her own desperate circumstances. She is sweet and strong. It’s helpful if the actor reads as older than the kids from onstage.
AGATHA TRUNCHBULL: The quintessential terrifying tyrant. As headmistress, she runs her school like a dictator, making up arbitrary rules to suit her every whim and dreaming up creative punishments. The Trunchbull can be played by a male or female (though the character is female). Seeking an actor and singer who can command the stage and embody Trunchbull’s larger-than-life villainy.
RUDOLPHO: Mrs. Wormwood’s self-obsessed dance teacher. This is a hilarious featured role for a comedic performer who moves well.
SERGEI: A customer swindled by Mr. Wormwood. Though he shows up looking for payback, Matilda has had quite enough of revenge, and Sergei lets the Wormwoods escape. Has an intimidating presence.
ENSEMBLE: Actors of all genders, ethnicities, abilities, skill levels, body styles, etc. Roles include Russians, Little Kids, Big Kids, Kids, Mums, Dads, the Cook, and the Mechanic!
